Easy Pain Au Chocolat “Chocolatines”

I could be a morning person…. if morning started at noon! Ha! But seriously, a typical day for me starts out like this: my son Braden wakes up at the crack of dawn, (okay, what’s the expression when dawn hasn’t even “cracked” yet, and it’s still dark outside? Because that’s more like it!) Then he stands by my bed, and says: “Muuuum, i’m huuuungry!” And I mutter something like: “Go back to bed Braden, It’s not time to wake up yet!” And then Braden moans: “But Muuuum, I want chocolate milk!” And then I somehow convince him to lay in our bed to get just a couple more precious minutes of much-needed sleep! But by that point my two year old, Gemma, is awake pleading for the same thing. So, we go into the kitchen–and they both ask for instant breakfast, warmed in the microwave (I know that’s weird, but I don’t ask questions at 6:45a.m). Then my husband and I grab a glass of the same thing (but cold) and that’s pretty much how lame I am at doing mornings, and breakfasts!

It was pretty much the same thing growing up in England too, but instead of waking up at 6.45a.m I had to wake up at 5.45a.m to attend an early morning scripture study class at my church (seminary!) So, breakfast was the absolute furthest thing from my mind and i’d be quite content to sleep an extra few minutes than to take the time to eat. But my Mum, knowing this all too well, would sometimes have a warmed chocolatine, or “Pain au Chocolat” and mug of hot chocolate waiting for me, that I could just grab and run out of the door with! I know i’m not exactly an “early bird,”  but chocolate and warm pastry ANY time of the day is good for me! {Well, not exactly “GOOD for me, but good with me!”}

I’m not as awesome as my Mum was, but for holidays and birthdays, I will wake up extra early to make my little family a special, delicious breakfast, consisting of actual FOOD! And because it’s both my sons 4th birthday and valentines on the same day this week, I decided to attempt making chocolatines! I found the EASIEST, simplest, most delicious way of making these, not skimping on the chocolate AT ALL, so I actually might be tempted to make breakfast around here more often! I hope you all enjoy this recipe guys!

Ingredients: (for 4 large)
1 package (2 sheets) Puff Pastry
1 egg, beaten
block/bar milk chocolate (about 10oz)
Chocolate Chips (1 cup)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400degf. Cut pastry sheets in half vertically

Slice the chocolate into long thin strips

Lay a strip of chocolate on one of the short-edges of the pastry

Roll the chocolate log up tightly in the pastry, adding a few more chocolate strips as you roll… {the more chocolate the better!}

Seal the edges, and place seam-side down onto a greased baking tray. Repeat with remaining Chocolatines, then brush with beaten egg. Bake  at 400degF for 25-30 minutes until tops are lightly golden brown.  Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and melt and stir in 30 second increments. Pour into a ziploc bag, then cut a tiny hole in the corner, and use it to drizzle the chocolate on top of the warm pain au chocolats
